For Mahana I worked closely with director Lee Tamahori to recreate and capture the flavour of rural east coast New Zealand in the early 1960s. The story of a multi-generational feud between two Maori sheep-shearing families, the Mahanas and the Poatas, the film required thorough research not only to provide us with authentic costume portrayal  but also to follow tikanga Maori, the correct cultural procedures in the events that unfold in the story.
